DENGUE FEVER OUTBREAK
User/Client:Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMC), Vellore, India
Abstract:
Because no vaccine is currently available for dengue fever, mosquito control that reduces larval breeding sources represents the most effective available long-term prevention measure. CMC spatially enabled the data collected on a recent dengue fever outbreak by generating a basemap for the village. Over a period of five days staff simply walked through the streets of the village using ArcPad with a GPS receiver to generate a street centerline file and then captured GPS points for each house in the village. Using house numbers, CMC could not only explore data on the dengue outbreak but could also integrate the detailed census data that has been collected by the Government of India since 1872. This process is intended to jumpstart GIS use for addressing other socioeconomic, environmental, and public health issues.
