TELEPHONE POLE MAPPING & INVENTORY

CH2M Hill is a consultancy servicing the telecommunications industry. A key client requirement is often to document, control and maintain an accurate inventory of communications assets. Deployment of ArcPad and related technologies dramatically reduces human error in data collection via pre-defined attributes and pick lists. This coupled with real-time, sub-metre DGPS provides timely, accurate information about cable location. Savings are realised due to the more rapid location of the fault, cutting down on total service and repair time. ArcPad will also be used by a major utilities company that has 300,000 poles requiring a "make ready" upgrade. These upgrades will allow the utility to sell space on poles to competitive cable/telco carriers. ArcPad will be used for all data collection via customised forms while the office GIS will be used to link the field data to the customer database and to link to photographs of the asset.
