STREET FURNITURE MAPPING

The Mornington Peninsula shire is an urban/rural municipality. To collect outdoor asset data (eg: seats, tables and bins) in a rural environment a GPS and ArcPad system are mounted in a car. By contrast bicycles fitted with a GPS (on the rear wheel) and ArcPad (on the handlebars) are an excellent solution for urban data collection as they are faster than walking and can access areas such as parks and beaches that are inaccessible by car. Having the assets mapped provides Mornington Council with a good indication of the overall size of the asset base and with its graphical representation provides a more informative overview to management, staff and citizens that traditional list does not provide. Mornington use the information regularly as a valuable planning tool.
