Various factors influence grape growth such as soil, fertilisers and disease while quality measurement and benchmarking involves activities such as stratified sampling and analytical assessment yet many existing vineyard management systems are spreadsheet based at best. ArcPad on a handheld device with a GPS was seen as an excellent solution to data collection at Lake Marmal as it was quickly and easily able to capture major event locations such as disease outbreak and flooding as well as being able to tie yield values to location. Using customised forms all canopy and fruit characteristics are captured and photos taken and linked to location. Once back at the office the data gathered can be analyse relationships between grape growth and location as well as used to model potential changes and influences on yield. This type of data collection also complies with viticultural and environmental regulations.
